Healthy Thursday: Joine A Cause or Volunteer

Are you sad, lonely, feeling not needed? Are you retired, disabled, or just feeling not needed? Then you need to possibly volunteer, or join a cause. Helping people is one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself, and your community. If you are home bound, but still feel the urge to help others there are several online ways you can help. One of those is joining the Literacy Site. Education and reading, is kind of my passion. I think all kids should be able to learn to read, write, and get an education. So everyday they send me an email and I click the little button, and free books are donated. If I want to buy a gift for someone I try to buy it from their site, so the proceeds go to free books for those who need them. I just bought the cutest slipper shoes, and one book was donated from that purchase. Be careful to not get caught up in causes, or charities that are not legit. Do your homework first, there are a lot of scam artists out there. In honor of this post I am giving away a free book to one lucky reader. You must live in the US, click the like button for my Facebook page, shown right at the top of this blog. That is it. All who do that will get an entry to win Love Food and Live Well. This is a new book, read only once by myself. All entries will be placed in a hat, and a name drawn. This will run until next Thursday, at 8 AM. Please leave me a comment with your email address, or blog site where you can be reached if you should win.

Make Money Writing Articles

London Brokers, is a new website to me. I just signed up there, but have not been able to write an article as of yet. They do pay via Paypal each week, which is really nice, as long as you have reached the 10 dollar payout. You write the articles based on directions given from the seller. Once you write the article it is no longer yours, and the buyer uses it as they see fit. Like all work from home jobs, be sure to read all the terms, and requirements they expect of you, before beginning to write an article. They have an extensive help page, with tons of info. One reason I haven't written an article yet, is because I have not read all the terms. If you want a little extra cash, then hop on over and check it out. Some people make a living off writing articles each day. I will settle for one a day, LOL! Good luck, and you do not have to have a blog for this site. The article does not get posted to your blog. Click the link above to begin the process. If they have a referral program I did not find it yet.

Healthy Thursday: Figuring Out Your BMR

For today's Healthy Thursday tip, I am going to give you the formula for figuring out your Basic Metabolic Rate, or BMR. What is BMR? Your BMR is unique to you based on your age, current weight, and height, also whether you are male or female. The BMR will tell you how many calories your body needs in a day to function properly. This is based on a no exercise time at all. So basically it is how many calories your body needs to function each day, without physical activity. So if you are not currently active, this is what you should be following. Please note if you already have underlying medical conditions you must always ask your physician before you take these kinds of things to heart. Disease and medication can severely effect how you should or should not follow a diet. For me, I am female, at my current weight, age and height my BMR came out to be 1585 calories/day. I rounded it to 1600 for ease of calculations. I am going to try my best to stick to this, but I am not optimistic it will be easy. If I add activity, I can add a little bit to it. Here is how to figure out your BMR.

Women: 655 +(4.3 x your weight in pounds) + (4.7 x your height in inches) - (4.7 x your age in years.)

Men: 66 + ( 6.3 x your weight in pounds) + ( 12.9 x your height in inches) - (6.8 x your age in years.)

Healthy Thursday: Own A Pet For Stress Relief

It is Thursday again, so that means it is Healthy Thursday. Focusing on stress relief again this week. I read somewhere once that petting a dog can decrease your blood pressure, and help relieve everyday stress. A dog is a loyal and affordable way to relieve stress. These are my two beauties Biscuit almost two years old, and Lucky just nine weeks old. While having a new puppy can be stressful for the first few weeks, due to adjustment issues, loving it and nurturing it is very rewarding and stress relieving. None of my dogs have ever been purebred dogs. I always go for a dog that needs a home, and lots of love. While we did have to put our beloved Krypto down last fall, he still remains with us everyday. If you are unsure of a shelter in your area you can go to Petfinder to find animals ready to be adopted in your area. Whether you want a dog, cat, rabbit, bird or some other furry friend, Petfinder can help you find one. Dogs can also help you get into an exercise routine, because you should walk it daily for the dogs own health. This is especially true if you don't have a safe and fenced yard for your dog to run around in. Be sure to do research on what kind of pet would be best for you and your family situation. Not all pets are meant for all families. Some dogs can actually be bothersome if you have small children or other pets. A little research goes a long ways. There are also animal rescues that allow you to adopt pets. These are a great resource as well. Love a pet and bring your stress level under control. Try it, it works!

Make Meals For Busy Moms?

I actually read about this idea in a Woman's magazine. They were giving ways to make money from home, and one of them was to prepare meals for busy working moms. The idea is you advertise you are making lasagna that day and have x amount of servings available to anyone who can pick it up, with the price listed. The recommended using Facebook and other social media sites to promote your product. I find this very intriguing because I think it would be of great benefit to working moms, and bring in extra cash to the home. What they didn't say though, was does this make you a restaurant, a seller of food, what regulations would you need to follow, what are you allowed to do and not do? I have not found the answers yet. If anyone has any experience with this, I would love to hear more. Please share with all my readers.

Healthy Thursday: National Nutrtion Month

Did you know that March is National Nutrition Month, and February was National Heart Health Awareness Month? Well they are. Today for Healthy Thursday we are talking eating healthy and nutrition. Below are two books one for kids, and one for adults, that can help you learn to eat better and get better nutrition. I know for me eating healthy is a challenge. I love snack foods, mainly salty ones, and I like food that tastes good not bland. Cutting down on fat and salt is an important goal for me. I do not cook with salt anymore, rather use garlic or other spices to flavor my food. I do add some at the table but very little. I try to bake or grill as much as possible, as opposed to frying the food. Here in the South frying is an integral part of all cooking, so eating out can be a challenge as well. Get your kids eating healthy young, and they will thank you in the future. They may not always follow what you teach them, but knowledge is the best way to get kids eating healthy, and of course by setting the example yourself. To purchase the childrens book, please visit my Barefoot Book Store. 10% of all my commissions I make in March, will be donated to the Hunger Site. To purchase the cooking book, just click the banner. Happy and Healthy Thursday.

Healthy Thursday: Reading For Good Health

I could do several posts on stress, and the effects it has on the body. Matter of fact I probably will, LOL. Today I am going to focus on reading for stress reduction. I love to read. I read every night before I go to bed. I actually read all day, since I homeschool, blog, and nursing education means I read a lot. But my night time reading is almost always purely for relaxation and fun. Did you also know that not only can reading help you to clear your mind and relax, but it can also enhance your mind and educate. Alzheimers research shows that one of the best ways to prevent Alzheimers is to continuously use your brain. Reading uses a big part of your brain not only to recognize old words but to learn new ones as well. Your brain will require you to comprehend what you are reading. Then if you decide to review the book, your brain requires you to recall what you read, and use learned writing techniques to write the review. Reading is an affordable and easy way to relax, and keep your brain young. If you have a blog, like me, you can join Blogging For Books. Once your blog has been accepted you get to choose a book, read the book, then review the book. I just did my very first review, and you can see the book I reviewed, and my review, by clicking this link. You can then rate my review. I would appreciate all reviews anyone can give me. So hurry on over, sign yourself up, read my review, and rate me. I do not believe you have to sign up to rate my review. So check it out.
